First, you should always play good hands preflop. Many new players make the mistake of playing weak unsuited aces. This is one of the worst hands to play preflop, as other players can easily have AK or QJ and out kick you. This mistake is costly, so be sure to play your best hands before seeing the flop.

Once the flop is dealt, there will be another round of betting. This is started by 2 mandatory bets called blinds, put into the pot by the two players to the left of the dealer. Then players can call, raise, or fold.

The key to being a good poker player is learning how to read tells. This means being able to see if your opponent is holding a strong hand or bluffing. This skill can be used to your advantage when deciding to call or fold in certain situations. It is also helpful when determining how much to bet in certain situations.
